What is the HTML tag ?

HTML tag represents inline subscript text in an HTML document.

Normally, HTML tag is rendered with a lowered baseline.

HTML tag renders with a lower baseline and with a smaller font than surrounding text font.

Subscript text appears half a character below the normal line, and is sometimes rendered in a smaller font.

How HTML tag works ?

HTML tag is used only for typographical reasons. It shouldn’t be used for styling purposes.

Alternatively, we can change the vertical position of a text by using CSS vertical-align property with the “sub” value.

Why is the HTML tag used ?

HTML tag is used to display subscript text in an HTML document.

For example, in the chemical formula CO2, the number 2 is rendered as subscript which has a smaller font and appears with a lowered baseline.

HTML tag is useful for presenting mathematical formula and chemical formulas such as H2O.
