What is HTML <rp> tag ?
HTML <rp> tag provides parentheses around a ruby text in browsers that do not support ruby annotations.
HTML <rp> tag is used together with the <ruby> and the <rt> tags.
HTML <rp> tag is introduced new in HTML5.
What is a Ruby charecter ?
Ruby characters are small, annotative glosses that can be placed above or to the right of a Chinese character while writing logographic languages such as Chinese or Japanese to show the pronunciation.
Ruby annotations, are usually used as a pronunciation guide for relatively obscure characters.
What is ruby annotations ?
Ruby annotations are used in East Asian Chinese, Japanese, and Korean typography.
Its used to display certain characters in several Asian languages, using <ruby> element.
How HTML <rp> tag works ?
HTML <rp> tag is used to provide fall back parenthesis for the content which is to be shown in the browser when the browser does not support display of ruby annotations.
We have to use HTML <rp> tag together with HTML <ruby> and HTML <rt> tag.
HTML <ruby> element consists of one or more characters that needs an explanation/pronunciation.
HTML <rt> element that gives that information.
And <rp> element that defines what to show for browsers that not support ruby annotations.
Note : <rp> element is an optional element.
Why HTML <rp> tag is used ?
HTML <rp> tag is used to display the ruby text when the browser does not support ruby annotations.
This Ruby annotations is widely used in Japanese publications.
