What is the HTML <map> tag ?
HTML <map> tag is used to define an image map with clickable areas.
HTML <map> tag is used with <area> tag to represent a client-side image map.
What is an Image map ?
An image map consists of an image with clickable areas inside the image.
When you click on the image area, the browser will open to new or the provided destination.
How HTML <map> tag works ?
HTML <map> tag connects the <img> tag with a client-side image-map, which means that the browser is responsible for the code interpreting and the image map rendering.
This creates a relationship between the image and the map.
“name” attribute is used with the <map> tag and “usemap” attribute with the <img> tag.
HTML <map> tag can consist of more than one <area> elements which defines the coordinates and type of the area.
Why is HTML <map> tag used ?
HTML <map> tag is used to define an image map with clickable areas inside the webpage.
Clickable areas are created using the <area> tag and each clickable area can have a hyperlink associated with it. Whenever there is a requirement like this HTML <map> tag along with <area> tag is used.
